Challenge
Java Whiskers, a unique cat café concept with locations in Sweden and London, approached Oyster to help drive greater engagement and bookings through their digital marketing efforts. The challenge was to promote seasonal and holiday-related events, boost footfall for their cafés, increase bookings for parties and corporate events and raise awareness about the adoption of rescue cats – all while ensuring their marketing campaigns aligned with the charm and ethos of their brand.
Venues like Java Whiskers face unique hurdles in increasing footfall and maintaining steady bookings. As a niche business, they rely on creating a memorable and engaging experience that can stand out in competitive urban environments. Seasonal fluctuations and varying consumer priorities make it even more challenging to sustain high attendance year-round. Additionally, ensuring that their dual mission of operating as a café while promoting rescue cat adoptions, resonates effectively with a diverse audience requires a delicate balance. In particular, the London location needed to compete with a plethora of tourist attractions and entertainment options, while the Swedish venues faced the challenge of building awareness in a market less familiar with the concept of cat cafés.
Solution
To address this, we implemented a series of advertising campaigns on Facebook and Instagram tailored to each market. For the UK location, we created highly targeted campaigns, including gift voucher promotions, afternoon tea experiences, and ads aimed at shoppers and tourists looking for unique activities in London. In Sweden, campaigns were adjusted to align with local interests and preferences while maintaining a consistent brand identity.
We also supported Java Whiskers’ special events, such as Kitten Yoga, Paws & Paint evenings, Meowfulness meditation sessions, quiz nights and speed dating. These events provided an opportunity to highlight the cafés’ distinctive appeal and attract a diverse audience. In addition to social media advertising, we optimised their digital infrastructure by setting up Conversions API/server-side tracking for Meta and Google Ads, provided SEO consultancy to improve their online visibility and assisted in the creation of a new website for their Swedish market based on the UK site. To complement these efforts, we launched Google and YouTube advertising campaigns to further enhance their reach.
Results
The results speak for themselves. In the UK, campaigns achieved a median return on ad spend (ROAS) of 4.6, with peak performance reaching as high as 10.6
In Sweden, the campaigns performed even better, with a median ROAS of 4.9 and peaks of up to 9.9. These results highlight the effectiveness of our strategic approach in delivering strong returns while helping Java Whiskers connect with their audience and achieve their goals.
